After water usage concerns, Liberty fixes issue before Thanksgiving - KSHB

LIBERTY, Mo. — After a request to conserve water from the city of Liberty raised concerns about Thanksgiving plans, the problem at the water treatment plant was resolved Monday and service has returned to normal.

Liberty residents received an alert from the city over the weekend advising them to limit water usage as a result of a mechanical problem at the treatment plant, which significantly reduced output.

City spokesperson Sara Cooke said Monday that a failed motor inside a water tower caused the issue, but maintenance workers found a solution after tapping into the Kansas City, Missouri, water supply to meet residents' needs.

“We’re starting to replenish the water now and we feel fairly confident in the fix we have,” Cooke said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a holiday or the middle of a week, we have to make sure we’re providing water. Our staff stepped up and came up with a solution.”

The issues with the treatment plant caused concerns for businesses and for residents preparing to host Thanksgiving gatherings.

At Sorella’s Deli in downtown Liberty, the request to conserve water was on the minds of kitchen staff.

“We’re basically making sure we’re being super efficient about how we use our water,” manager Jessica Maddox said. “We’re making sure we’re not wasting it. We’re turning it off instead of leaving it running when we go to grab something.”

Maddox said the water usage issue raised some concerns in anticipation of a busy holiday week.

“With everything going on, it’s twice as much,” she said. “You’re doubling your efforts of doing dishes; you’re doubling your food.”

Liberty resident Jeanne McNabney said it was going to be tricky to conserve water around Thanksgiving.

“I have about 30 people coming this year,” she said. “We will have extra showers, extra toilets flushing and lots of dishes.”

After hearing about the water issues, McNabney said she thought of all the impacts to holiday plans.

“I was thinking about the three sets of china that all have to be hand washed,” she said. “Could it worse timing? Our hotels are going to fill up. Our houses are going to fill up. We’ve got all these people coming.”

Before the city announced an end to the advisory Monday, McNabney joined other neighbors in finding ways to cut back.

“I only did two loads of laundry this weekend instead of the usual five or six,” she said. “I’m trying to not run the water when I’m washing something. Turn it off and on.”

With the request to conserve water now lifted, neighbors said the focus could be on properly preparing for Thanksgiving.

“The city seems to have handled it well,” McNabney said. “We’ve got all these people coming. We have to do dishes, laundry and linens.”
