An 11-year-old boy who was went missing while playing in the woods in Chicopee and was pulled from the water Saturday afternoon has died, while authorities continued to search for another 10-year-old boy he was with, according to officials.
The 11-year-old, who was from Pawtucket, R.I., was recovered from the water and taken to Baystate Medical Center and then flown to Boston Children’s Hospital, where he later died, according to a statement Sunday from the Hampden district attorney’s office. The two boys are believed to be cousins.
It’s believed that the boys were playing in a wooded area near 283 Fuller Road when they ventured out onto the ice along the Chicopee River, according to the DA’s office and Chicopee police. They were reported missing around 1:07 p.m. after one of their parents couldn’t find them.

A “significant search and rescue operation” was kicked off, led by the Chicopee police and fire departments, as well as Massachusetts State Police, the DA’s office said.
A State Police helicopter as well as a Chicopee police K9 unit and an underwater response team participated in the search, Chicopee police said in a statement on Facebook.
The search was suspended early Sunday evening and is expected to continue on Monday morning, according to Chicopee police.
Police also thanked the community for its “compassion” and offered its support to the boy’s family.
“Our deepest condolences, sympathies, and prayers are with his family,” police said on social media.
