Cleanup, repairs begin after 30-inch water main breaks in North Park - The San Diego Union-Tribune

Water flowed down North Park streets for about two hours early Tuesday after a 30-inch cast iron water main burst, damaging homes and flooding a nearby city-run golf course that has been closed for the day

The break was first reported around 5:45 a.m. on Ray Street near Capps Street, a police spokesman said.

Up to 2 1/2 feet of water was reported to be flowing down some streets at one point, and San Diego firefighters and lifeguards went home to home to assist residents who were sheltering in place.

Water to the broken pipe was shut off around 8 a.m., said Scott Robinson, a spokesman for the city water department. In addition to the transmission line, a smaller 8-inch distribution line that serves home in the neighborhood also was shut off.

“About a five-block radius of residents are without water,” Robinson said around 11 a.m. “We are working quickly to restore it. “

Repair work on Ray Street was expected to last at least until Wednesday and could take longer, depending on whether the city decides to abandon the 30-inch pipe or to repair it, Robinson said.

The area has had several water main breaks in recent years in that area, and the pipe was slated to be replaced under the city’s capital improvement program.

It was unclear how quickly residents would have water restored to their homes. It also wasn’t immediately known how many homes and vehicles were damaged by the flooding or the extent of their losses, Robinson said.

“We will have to wait until residents report it,” he said.

The city planned to turn water back on to the 8-inch distribution line and see if it holds."If it holds, we will have water,"Robinson said. If it breaks, he said the city planned to bring in water trucks or hook up temporary water lines from hydrants to serve customers.

Runoff from the broken pipe also flooded Balboa Golf Course, which will remain closed Tuesday, Robinson said.
