Water quality, supply remain as key goals for Neosho River's Regional Advisory Committee - KVOE

2020 figures to be a busy year for the Neosho River Regional Advisory Committee, and certain lessons from 2019 may play a role in the committee's ongoing planning efforts.

The committee has had a longstanding focus on water quality, especially reducing the amount of sediment going to John Redmond Reservoir. Committee chair Jay Byers says current projects to reduce sediment, including cover crops, need further study to see just how effective they are -- whether under relatively normal conditions or the significant flooding seen across the watershed last year.

Byers says a lot of silt went into John Redmond last year after extremely heavy rain, especially in April and May. While disappointing, Byers says the 2019 results "reinforced" efforts to inform ag producers about best practices to reduce sediment going downstream. Additional dredging work is possible, but the timetable has not been determined.

Committee member and past chair Angela Anderson says landowners are showing more buy-in up and down the riverbanks when it comes to different practices. She also says the committee is working on what she calls a "treatment train" for reducing sediment and keeping soil nutrients.

Kansas Water Office Chief of Planning and Neosho RAC Planner Bobbi Luttjohann says Governor Laura Kelly is fully on board with efforts to improve water quality and increase water supply.

Looking beyond 2020 when it comes to water supply, there is a possibility of a second dredging project at John Redmond, although several things would have to be finalized before the project including the dredging method. There has also been some discussion about building new reservoirs, including one possibly for Lyon County, but anything besides talk is unlikely because of the amount of land needed and the lack of federal-level dollars available to help fund that work.

The RAC's first meeting of 2020 is Jan. 14 in Yates Center. Click here for a link to the Neosho RAC's information page online through the Kansas Water Office.
