Q: There is a water leak underneath Highway 101 near Oakland Road that has been there for years. It has gotten progressively worse. I can now see the water bubbling up. The earth under the freeway is starting to give way, creating potholes, etc. It is an ever-growing hazard that doesn’t seem to be given any attention by the powers that be. Just thought someone should know. It has been bugging me for years.
This tops it all: I was driving home, slowing in anticipation of the potholes. What did I see? Water literally spouting out of the freeway like a broken lawn sprinkler. It is really hard to believe this is a groundwater issue. I’ve had a few friends wonder the same thing and I told them I’d check with Mr. Roadshow.
Hector Flores, Doug Pickering, Robert Lyng, Liz Valdez and so many others
A: Folks, I bring worrisome news. The flooding here is due to underground water that is mere inches from the surface in this area, instead of the usual six to 10 inches. Water district officials and Caltrans thought it would recede, as it normally does, and after a dry fall, as well as repairs made in October. But it hasn’t. At this point, it may linger into next spring.
Q: I wrote about repaving Interstate 880 in Fremont between Mowry and Thornton. Is anything in the works?
Sherry Hughes, Newark
A: Folks, I bring good news. Caltrans will repave 880 in this area through the weekend during daytime hours. It’s too chilly to do this at night.
Q: Friday was the first day the 237 express lane opened. I drove eastbound from Mountain View to Zanker at 9:45 a.m. and saw exactly two cars in the express lane. I think it is outrageous that the authorities made the FastTrak hours from 5 a.m to 8 p.m. There is no congestion between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Now those of us who don’t want to pay have to live with one more underutilized lane.
CTYen, Sunnyvale
A: Those will be the hours on all future express lanes. Do another express lane car count in a few weeks.
Q: Gary, Gary, Gary. What are we going to do with you? You have gone over to the dark side. You said “the 237” multiple times in an article last week. You also used “the 280” and “the 85.” So who are you and what have you done with our Gary? You’re clearly from that other part of the state, like L.A., man. I’ll bet it was done just to annoy your faithful readers. You know that Northern Californians hate it, but you must have a reason. What is it?
Chris Verbil, Tricia Coogan, Donald Caddes, Dave Erickson, Carl Stoffel and so many others
A: A brain lapse. I meant to change those “the 237” references but forgot. Mea culpa.
